From the perspective of religious studies, Sedona is an outstanding example of a New Age center: a place in which alternative spiritual ideas, practitioners, organizations, and businesses have become unusually concentrated. “New Age” refers broadly to a loosely organized current of modern spirituality that became especially visible in the United States and the United Kingdom during the 1970s and 1980s. It has no central institution, creed, or recognized leadership, and many participants deliberately distance themselves from organized religion. Nevertheless, influential teachers, authors, and entrepreneurs have attracted followings and helped circulate New Age ideas.
Many participants do not use or appreciate the label “New Age.” “Metaphysical,” “holistic,” “spiritual,” and “consciousness” are common alternatives. The boundaries are fluid, but recurring themes make the category useful for both scholars and the public. These include an emphasis on individual experience; practices such as meditation and yoga; the belief that religions share an underlying spiritual unity; confidence in personal transformation and expanded consciousness; and interest in subtle energies, spirit guides, astrology, channeling, crystals, and other forms of esoteric knowledge. Not every person or organization in this section accepts all of these ideas.
Sedona’s reputation as a spiritual center expanded rapidly in the late twentieth century, especially through claims that particular red-rock sites were “vortexes” or centers of spiritual energy. The 1987 Harmonic Convergence brought international attention to Sedona, but it did not create the local metaphysical milieu from nothing. Earlier artists, seekers, esoteric groups, and spiritual teachers had already been drawn to the landscape. The vortex idea gave these currents a powerful shared symbol and helped connect them to tourism.
New Age spirituality now reaches far beyond clearly identified New Age organizations. Public figures often use the language of energy, connection, purpose, and personal transformation without adopting a formal religious identity. This wider cultural influence is one reason Sedona is important: the city makes highly visible a set of ideas and practices that circulate much more broadly in contemporary society.
The listings in this section include organizations, teachers, centers, shops, tours, and practitioners whose primary identity is metaphysical or New Age. Because categories overlap, some entries may also appear under meditation, yoga, healing, shamanism, new religions, or other headings. Cross-listing is intentional when it helps readers locate a resource without forcing a complex organization or practitioner into only one category.
